If you want to work in entertainment

In the last couple of years, I’ve been embracing this whole social networking, internet shit, and making contacts on various social networks. A lot of young people have been following me, and if they have something interesting or cool, I’ll follow them back. A lot of them have videos showing off their various skills: singing, playing music or sports, skateboarding, freestyle BMXing, doing gymnastics, dancing or any other number of things that kids do. I try to pass along an encouraging comment from time to time; to keep developing their talents, be mindful and safe, and so forth. I get the sense that many of them hope to pursue careers in entertainment, and it’s with that in mind that I write this. It’s not meant to be an end all, be all guide to the entertainment industry; it’s just my thoughts based on my experience. I’ll get to the advice, but to put it in context, let me tell you about Will.

Doctor 420

Just playing around with my iPhone about a year ago. Shot it with the ‘Super 8’ app; cut it and added titles & music with iMovie. Even used iMovie to upload it directly to YouTube from my iPhone. Thanks for watching. Hope you enjoy it.

I’m going to be at ITV Fest/PopCon 2012

A few months ago I worked on a 10 minute pilot sample for a series called Frog Kissers, the story of four women in New York City who reason that in order to find a prince you have to kiss a lot of frogs, and make a pact to kiss 100 men over the course of a year to find their prince(s). I have a brief role as one of the “frogs.” Frog Kissers is created by Debra Kirschner, who also wrote and directed the pilot sample; she also produced with Sherese Robinson.

The pilot sample of Frog Kissers is screening at this year’s International TV Festival/PopCon in Los Angeles, California. I’ll be attending the Fest from July 5-8, so if you happen to be in L.A., be sure to come check out the screening and stop by to say, “What’s up?” to me in person. Debra and Sherese are both friendly people, so come by and say, “Hi!” to them too.

We’d love to have a good crowd at the screening, so if you can’t make it, please spread the word to anyone you know who may be able and interested in attending. Here’s the trailer (look fast for my shiny forehead around the 1:02 mark):

Hope to see you there!

UPDATE (6/26/2012): Debra has created a Facebook event for the Frog Kissers screening for those of you who would like to RSVP — smile

Police Academy On TV This Week

Coming up: Social Video, Police Academy, Celebrity Apprentice

What’s up people? I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything, but he’s a quick update on some upcoming posts:

It’s been a little over a year since I wrote a post on Viddy. Seeing as how the head of the company stopped by, read it and then addressed pretty much all of my beefs with the next software update, I should have acknowledged that a lot sooner, but in case you haven’t noticed, I’m kind of dick sometimes. Well, that follow up is coming, along with a look at some of the other players in the social video arena (specifically, Tout, YouToo, Qik and Color, because they’re the ones I’ve used).

Also, by (sort of) popular demand, I’ll be writing a piece on the sociological undertones of the Police Academy movies. Yup, that’s right. Last week, The AV Club celebrated Police Academy with a series of articles. I left a detailed comment on one of the articles, which got some good feedback, and a crowd sourced idea for a post. I don’t actually own the movies, because they’re on TV all the time. In fact, here’s what a TiVo search brings up:

Police Academy On TV This Week
They’re still in heavy rotation after all these years

As you can see, with the exception of The Original and Citizens On Patrol, the entire movie series will be on premium cable this week. I’ve already set the TiVo to grab them, and I’ll swing by the library to borrow DVDs of the two that aren’t airing. I’ll watch ’em all and regurgitate something eventually.

Lastly, while writing this, I’m also live tweeting this season’s finale of The Celebrity Apprentice. I’ve been doing that all season, so I’ll be writing a post or two relating to that. Eventually.
